Written in 1820, The Legend of Sleepy Hollow takes place in 1790 seven years after the American Revolutionary War. Focusing on the travails of Ichabod Crane, a lean, lanky, and thoroughly superstitious schoolmaster, it details his efforts to woo the daughter of a wealthy Dutch settler and farmer. His only problem is that he is in competition for her affection with “Brom Bones”, the town rowdy. Things reach their peak when, at a harvest party at the Van Tassel homestead, Brom tells of the story of the ‘Headless Horseman’, a notorious ghost who was decapitated by a cannonball during the recent war and who, as local legend has it, rises from his grave every night to search for his missing head!

Just in time for the holiday season, Blue Bridge will revive its popular Christmas romantic comedy that hilariously chronicles the misunderstandings and delusions of two employees at a leathergoods shop in Budapest. By day they can barely stand each other. What they don’t realize is that they are falling in love with their idealized versions of each other through anonymous letters they have been sharing for several weeks.
Made famous in North America by the 1940’s film of the same name directed by Ernst Lubitsch and starring Jimmie Stewart and Maureen O’Hara, and more recently in the remake titled You’ve Got Mail starring Tom Hanks and Meg Ryan, this 1937 play is full of delight as it reminds us of the power of love and the Christmas season to heal all that appears to separate us.
Stay tuned for our updates on our planned Christmas Bazaar in the warmth and comfort of UVic’s beautiful Phoenix Theatres.
