Arms & the Man

A soldier enters battle armed only with chocolates, not bullets. He is fighting for the affections of a young woman who is torn between the anti-heroic ‘chocolate soldier’ and her charming but superficial fiancée. This popular comedy has all the ingredients of a ‘fantastic, psychological extravaganza, in which drama, farce and irony keep flashing past.’ (William Archer). Set during the Serbo-Bulgarian War of 1885, this was Shaw’s first big hit of his long career, and is one of his most frequently produced plays. Over the years, Arms and the Man has starred legends such as Sir Laurence Olivier and Marlon Brando, who personally selected it for his last stage appearance.

CAST

Glynis Leyshon will direct Blue Bridge Theatre’s version of Shaw’s witty ‘make love not war farce’. Fresh from his role as the co-star to, and understudy of, the Kim Catrall and Paul Gross led Broadway production of Private Lives, this production will mark the return to Blue Bridge of actor Dylan Smith who played Jacques in Blue Bridge’s inaugural production of Shakespeare’s As You Like It. Joining him in the role of Raina will be Stratford Festival lead actress Amanda Lisman and Vanessa Holmes in the role of Louka. They will be joined by Jay Hindle in the role of Sergius, Brian Linds in the role of Major Petkoff, Christine Willes in the role of Catherine Petkoff and Jacob Richmond as Nicola. Set and costumes will be designed by Nathan Brown, lights by Giles Hogya and sound by Brian Linds.
